What happens during a call

The two participants connect through WebRTC. Each receiving device sends the other participant’s microphone audio to OpenAI’s realtime translation service so translated audio and captions can be returned. Echoes does not claim end-to-end encryption because audio is processed by OpenAI.

Echoes does not record calls or retain call audio on its server.

What stays on your device

Your display name, contacts, recent-call history, notification preference, saved recaps, and phrasebook are stored in your browser’s local storage. The installed PWA uses that same local site storage; installation does not create cloud sync. Clearing browser data can remove it.

Minimal presence information

To make saved contacts and call alerts work, the server keeps a random device identifier, an optional name you chose, your selected language, notification subscription data, and the last time the device was seen. It does not store a raw IP address in the presence registry.

Product analytics

Echoes logs call lifecycle events such as a room being created, an invite opening, a participant joining, and media connecting. Marketing pages may log the requested path, broad referrer host, and campaign parameters. IP addresses are converted into short keyed hashes for aggregate counting; raw IP addresses are not written to the analytics log.

No call audio, caption text, transcript text, contact name, or phrasebook content is included in product analytics.

Optional recaps

A two-sided transcript is assembled on each participant’s device. It is sent to OpenAI for summarization only when that participant taps the recap button. Echoes does not retain the transcript on its server.

Hospitality pilot inquiries

If you submit the pilot form, Echoes stores the business name, contact name, work email, location count, optional notes, submission time, and campaign attribution so Hunter Technologies can reply. This inquiry record is separate from call data. Do not submit sensitive guest information.

Important limits

AI translations can be inaccurate. Echoes is not a certified interpreter and is not intended for emergencies or high-stakes medical, legal, financial, or safety decisions.

Questions about privacy or a pilot inquiry can be sent to [email protected].
