Connect through a private room
The caller shares a six-digit room link or QR code. Browser-to-browser WebRTC carries the conversation between the two devices.
Translate for the listener
Each device receives the other person’s microphone and asks OpenAI to translate it into the local participant’s selected language.
Play speech and captions together
Translated audio plays through the listener’s device while caption deltas appear on screen. Optional video places subtitles over the call.
Keep useful context locally
Contacts, recent calls, and saved phrases remain in local browser storage. A recap is sent for processing only when explicitly requested.

Technical FAQ
How audio, captions, and recaps work.
What happens to the original microphone audio?−
The two devices connect peer-to-peer for the call. The receiving device sends the other participant’s audio to OpenAI for live translation into its selected language.
Why should participants use headphones?+
Headphones prevent translated playback from feeding back into the microphone and make a two-way translated conversation easier to follow.
What happens after a call?+
Participants can save the other person as a contact, keep useful lines in a local phrasebook, or explicitly request an AI recap. Echoes does not automatically store a server-side transcript.
Is there an Echoes app I can install?+
Yes. Echoes is an optional Progressive Web App, or PWA. Install it from your browser for a home-screen icon and app-like window. You can save someone as a contact after a call, ring that contact again with one tap, and enable call alerts on supported devices. Invitees can still join in a browser without installing anything.
Does Echoes work between iPhone and Android?+
Yes. Echoes is browser-based, so an iPhone, Android phone, tablet, or computer can join the same translated call. Each device needs a modern browser, an internet connection, and microphone permission.
Are calls recorded?+
Echoes does not record calls or store call transcripts on its server. Audio is processed live by OpenAI to create translated speech. A recap is generated only when a participant explicitly requests one.
Can I test it without inviting someone?+
Yes. A short test call with Echo, an AI conversation partner, lets you hear the experience before you send an invitation.
Is Echoes a certified interpreter?+
No. AI translation can make mistakes. Echoes is for everyday conversations, not emergencies or situations that require a qualified medical, legal, financial, or certified interpreter.
